Texas Regional JR VASE  Student Art Competition

What is  JR VASE?

JR VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) is the only  UIL art event of its kind in the nation! Students are provided the opportunity to bring artworks created in their art classes to their regional event where they are interviewed by a certified juror who evaluates their work based on a standard based rubric and their understanding of the art processes involved in the development of their artwork.  Only academically eligible junior high school students in grades 6-8 from throughout Texas can participate in JR VASE. Jurors will evaluate student artwork using the following standard:

  • Rating 4 Superior
  • Rating 3 Excellent
  • Rating 2 Average
  • Rating 1 Below Average

Medals are awarded to those students receiving a Superior (Rating 4) rating in each division at the regional event and medallions are awarded to those students receiving a Superior (Rating 4) rating at the state event. The "Gold Seal" medallion is the top state award presented to Exemplary works of art chosen by the state jury panel.

Why should I participate in VASE?

  • It’s a great opportunity to get feedback on your artwork by a judge, and possibly advance to state VASE!
  • You get to see and get inspired by artwork created by junior school students all over our region!
  • You get to meet and hang out with other artists all day!
  • Gain confidence and get recognition for your artwork!

When and where is VASE?

Date and location are still being decided, but it is usually in March and early April , but you will need to start preparing now!  There are deadlines you will need to meet prior to the event.

Parents will need to bring their child to the event themselves to meet up with their Oakcrest Intermediate art teacher.  Exact times will be announced later, but this event generally lasts all day so you must plan accordingly.
